Introduction
NMSU Swim School is a community-based instructional program primarily developed for teaching swimming to children beginning at the age of 3. The program's flexible design permits instructor customization that is administered to best fit a child's needs. These innovative teaching techniques are designed to enhance student learning in a challenging, fun and competitive environment.
Classes will meet Monday-Thurdays. There are no classes on Fridays.
Curriculum
Preschool
The Preschool (30 minute classes) class serves as a water introduction course for children 3-5 years old. Preschool swimmers will develop confidence in the water through developing skills such as rhythmic breathing, submerging their heads underwater, floating on their fronts and on their backs, kicking, and using their arms and legs to stay afloat. Preschool students will work closely with their instructors to gain familiarity and comfort in the water and also learn life saving skills.
Beginner
The Beginner (30 minute classes) class is for children 5-7 years old and provides basic swimming skills for each student. Building on the skills learned in the preschool curriculum, students will begin to develop and refine swimming skills independent from the instructor. They also will gain basic knowledge of freestyle and backstroke. Upon the successful completion of the course, students should be able to float, kick and swim independently.
Intermediate
The Intermediate (45 minute classes) class is for children 8-10 years old and offers a more comprehensive look at freestyle and backstroke, while also introducing the basic components of breaststroke. By combining content from previous classes and adding additional practice, students will become proficient swimmers in freestyle and backstroke, and also will learn the basic technique of diving. Students at this level must be able to swim at least 20 yards continuously. Children under the age of eight must present a completed beginner report card at the time of registration to successfully enroll in the intermediate class.
Advanced
The Advanced (45 minute classes) class is for children 10 and up. It offers an in-depth swimming experience in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. The student will also be introduced to and gain proficiency in the butterfly stroke. This class focuses on stroke technique and introduces the basic components of continuous lap swimming and sets. Students will polish their diving skills and learn competitive flip turns and open turns as well. Children under the age of eight must present a completed intermediate report card at the time of registration to successfully enroll in the advanced class.
