The purpose of the NMSU Rec-Sports Camp is to provide a sports/development experience for boys and girls ages 5 to 12 years-old. The intended purpose of the camp is to develop a wide variety of fundamental physical activity skills that are inherent to a healthy lifestyle and a lifetime of physical fitness. We believe that providing positive experiences in physical movement during childhood will set the foundation for a lifetime enjoyment of sport and recreation activity. Additionally, we believe that building a foundation of physical activity may decrease the likelihood of the development of diseases that manifest in the later stages of life due to sedentary lifestyles.
Sport Camp Structure
Camp programs for 5 to 8 year-olds will be based upon developing fundamental gross and fine motor skills that set the stage for success in sport performance later in life. Lead-up games and activities in traditional and non-traditional physical activities will be the primary focus. Campers ages 9 to 12 will experience developmental instruction in softball, volleyball, badminton, football, basketball, floor hockey, ultimate frisbee, swimming, dancing, mountain biking, canoeing, and cooperative games. The emphasis is for campers to develop competent to proficient skills in these activities. The structure of the camp in this manner is in line with the National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) objectives for a physically educated child. The structure is based upon the NASPE guidelines that professional instructors in children’s sports and physical activities follow in an educational and recreational setting.
